Scoreless Battle of The Leaders In The West
It was a fresh and beautiful Saturday night for the world’s sport in the Capital City. Sacramento Republic FC Vs. Vancouver Whitecaps 2 was one of the most attractive matches in the United Soccer League this weekend. The number one team against the number two team in the West Coast Conference standings. Everything was set up to witness a great match full of emotions, energy and have us on the edge of our seats.
Last night’s game was the third game between these two teams this season, which Sacramento Republic FC has not been able to win. Two games were scoreless draws and the second game was a loss 2-1 for Republic. However, since that loss on July 24th, Republic has not lost.
Sacramento Republic FC came into this game with six undefeated games; three-match win streak and with a great momentum. The team has been scoring goals and functioning well in all lines in the field. Also, the defense has been unyielding and playing good as well. There is chemistry between the team, and they understand each other in the field, which is a key factor for the success of the team.
The game started with high intensity from both teams. However, the crossbar and Republic FC’s bad luck in finishing the plays in front of the goal contributed to the scoreless night in front of the 11,569 fans at Bonney Field. Throughout the game, Republic created several opportunities of goal, despite the 0-0 draw.
The first clear opportunity for Sacramento Republic FC came at minute 20th when JJ Koval received assistance from Danny Barrera, lost his mark and kicked the ball for a great saved by goalkeeper Spencer Richey. A few seconds after, Cameron Iwasa struck the bar with a fired low. Then, several opportunities were created but were unable to open the scoreboard. In the minute 37th, the crossbar denied the opportunity for Iwasa to make history after a fantastic play when he drove the ball on the left side into the box and shoot the ball.
Sacramento dominated the first half and had more shots on the goal than their Canadian counterpart. The team made Vancouver play in their field, and the weakness of the Canadian team’s defense was visible. The second half did not change the story, and we witnessed a dominance by Sacramento.
Last night we saw two Republic debuts, Carlton Cole and Elliot Hord, who had an excellent participation in the game. The former EPL player, Carlton Cole, almost opened the scoreboard in the 88th minute when he struck the ball into the Whitecaps goal keeper’s face. Elliot Hord had an outstanding game and met coach Buckle’s expectations.
This time we did not get to witness Sacramento’s victory that we were hoping to see or being part of history on witnessing Iwasa’s 12th goal this season. However, Sacramento Republic FC remains first place in the West Conference standings and next Saturday, September 3rd, hosts Orange County Blues FC at Boney Field.
